Location of Higashiōmi in Shiga prefecture
The Yokaichi Giant Kite Festival is held on the fourth Sunday every May.
Higashiōmi (東近江市 Higashiōmi-shi?, lit. "East Ōmi") is a city located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
As of 2007, the city has an estimated population of 117,158 and the density of 305 persons per km². The total area is 383 km².
The city was founded on February 11, 2005 with the merger of Yōkaichi city and the towns of Eigenji, Gokashō, Aitō, and Kotō.
The adjacent lakeside towns of Notogawa and Gamō merged into Higashiōmi on January 1, 2006.
